Statement of Ang Kapatiran National Political Party on the Demise of President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino
excerpt(”Her spirit is so closely intertwined with the spirit of the nation and so we pray that just like Cory, the Filipino people will have their Easter…they will one day find meaning and purpose in the sufferings they continue to undergo and they will find their place in history as God’s faithful people in Asia.”)
We are one with the nation in mourning the demise of a servant leader who loved God and country and served her people with personal integrity and love.
She was our ‘Joan of Arc’ whose life is a gift to the nation especially the Filipino youth and a living witness of personal sacrifice as her decision to engage in politics changed the course of Philippine history culminating in the fall of a repressive dictatorship.
In her person, a courageous widow/housewife, we have an indigenous account of how God intervenes in history thru persons of faith who call out for the prophetic politics of personal and social transformation. She is a testimony that it is thru ’the least likely,’ ordinary individuals that ‘the proud of heart will be routed and that princes will be brought down their thrones.’
Her passing away signals every Filipino to revisit EDSA and the elusive democracy she and Ninoy valiantly defended. If we are a nation still grappling, it is perhaps because we have failed to fathom and live by the moral anddemocratic principles underlying her personhood as an icon of democracy. EDSA was not grasped by our national spirit.
After 23 years, the dictatorship Cory confronted and defeated has not left us but insidiously crept into the very soul of our nation in other more dangerous shapes and sizes:
1. the militarization of government;
2. the sinister plan to push for charter change despite Congress’ failure to enact IRRs to the Freedom Charter’s numerous non-self executing provisions, e.g., anti-dynasty provision;
3. cronyism, oligarchies, and traditional politics;
4. the Filipino diaspora at a staggering social cost; and
5. unbridled graft and corruption in business and government.
Her spirit is so closely intertwined with the spirit of the nation and so we pray that just like Cory, the Filipino people will have their Easter…they will one day find meaning and purpose in the sufferings they continue to undergo and they will find their place in history as God’s faithful people in Asia.
